Christian music rooted in Black American worship and communal performance. Genres are maps, not fences: artists borrow, scenes overlap and labels often arrive after the music itself. Use the term to find a lineage, then follow the musicians, places and recordings that complicate it.

What to listen for

Begin with choirs, call-and-response and powerful lead vocals. Compare recordings from different decades and regions, noticing changes in rhythm, instrumentation, vocal delivery and production. A compilation can provide orientation, but complete albums reveal pacing and artistic intent.
